MAN, those girls can shake their booty. The Destiny’s Child trio of Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle have now nestled themselves at the top of the all-girl supergirl tree and it’s not hard to see why.
At the M.E.N. Arena last night, the girls delivered a high-octane show to screaming, banshee fans who usually reserve their lungs for the likes of teen dreams Usher and Westlife.
And though it is said Destiny’s Child now hate one of their biggest hits - Bootylicious - it still serves as their unofficial anthem and ethos as they jiggle, wiggle and frankly contort their taught bodies through their greatest hits.
Bootylicious itself is given the shortest of run-throughs, as do some of their other big hits. The girls obviously want to offer mere sound bites of older material while highlighting their new music to full effect.
Although I’m sure fuller versions of the likes of Independent Woman and Bootylicious would have been appreciated, it is on songs from the new album that the girls really excelled, like the military-stomped Soldier and mass sing-along to Girl.
Some said the supergroup would never survive the success of the girls as solo artists, in particular Beyonce’s major chart domination. But the three really show their girl power by allowing each to show off their solo skills.
Unfortunately, that merely highlighted Beyonce’s massive star quality, producing the undoubted highlights of the show with an almost cinematic prowl through Baby Boy complete with white string two-piece and colonial entourage and umbrella, and the Vegas-style glitz jackpot of Crazy In Love.
