Give credit to Destiny's Child. The trio's not holding anything back on what
supposedly is the ladies' final tour together.
Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams brought their "Destiny
Fulfilled ... and Lovin' It" show Wednesday to the Mohegan Sun Arena. The
two-hour concert was far from perfect with poor pacing in spots and little sense
that this was the last go-around for the group. But Destiny's Child gave its
fans what they wanted -- a spectacle worth remembering.
The trio's set list included nearly all its hits, although many songs weren't
performed in their entirety. They only sang a little bit of "Bootylicious,"
"Jumpin Jumpin" and others. In fact, after opening with "Say
My Name," the group rushed through the first part of the show before settling
down midway.
Where the concert fell short on sound it more than made up for visually. The
three women flung their hair, changed costumes often and had sets that included
a waterfall, which appeared during the encore of "Lose My Breath."
The three staged a humorous bit by inviting three guys on stage during "Cater
2 U." The ladies danced grinding-style for and with the men in teasing
fashion.
Backup dancers filled the time between set and costume changes. Before the group's
performance of "Soldier," six male dancers came out in long, black
leather coats and tried to outdo each other with dance routines as, one-by-one,
they were introduced.
Prior to "Survivor," the male dancers dressed like matadors and the
female dancers, as well as Destiny's Child, came out in gypsy-type garments.
Destiny's Child dressed simply for its finale, wearing white tank tops, blue
jeans and no shoes. Its performance of "Lose My Breath" turned out
to be one of the night's highlights.
Of course, all discussion of Destiny's Child begins with Beyonce. Each of the
members performed solo numbers, and while Beyonce may not be the best vocally,
she is the best at showmanship.
Her solo career took off a few years ago and will likely continue to get bigger.
She showed her vocal powers in "Dangerously in Love" before pumping
up the crowd with her hit "Crazy in Love."
Rowland performed two solo songs including her No. 1 hit "Dilemma."
The most surprising part of the evening was Williams' solo gospel song "Do
You Know." Having a gospel number in the middle of a PG-13 rated show at
first seemed odd, but Williams' performance was powerful enough to carry it
out.
The group didn't give any sentimental goodbyes to end the show. Perhaps the
three know they still have their solo careers that will keep them in the spotlight.
Also, given how young they are, a reunion tour is probably only a few years
away.
R&B singer Mario performed a 30-minute set to open the night. The Usher-in-training
artist had a well-choreographed set and finished his performance with his hit
"Let Me Love You."
