BEYONCE Knowles must be a top friend. She stuck to her word and re-united Destiny's
Child, the group that made her famous, despite her lucrative solo career that
crosses music and film.
Now she has put that career on hold to follow through with the Destiny's Child
world tour.
However, after a run of extravagant concerts at Rod Laver Arena, their tour
looks distinctively cheap.
With only a video screen and some feathers that look more Reject Shop than Moulin
Rouge, it looked like they prepared to play a supermarket rather than a stadium.
The trio opened with some of their biggest and best hits, frustratingly all
cut down into bite-sized chunks as part of a medley that included Say My Name,
Jumpin' Jumpin', Bootylicious and Independent Women.
Still, what their stage show lacks, they make up for with the star power of
Beyonce.
Her bandmates get their solo moment to shine. Michelle Williams's brilliantly-sung
gospel song gave the hyperactive crowd a chance to sit down.
And Kelly Rowland's hit duet Dilemma was missing one key factor, rapper Nelly
who performed most of the vocals on the song.
But it was Beyonce's night. Looking white-hot (and dressed by her mum) her solo
hits Baby Boy and Naughty Girl stole the show.
And instant classic Crazy in Love almost made up for the solo Beyonce tour that
by-passed Australia.
Closing with Survivor, fans who paid up to $100 may have felt short-changed
when it came to production.
